Microfibre Maintenance: How to Clean Your Cloths & Drying Towels

You’ve invested in high-quality microfibre cloths and a premium drying towel to keep your car’s paintwork swirl-free. But here is the secret most detailers won’t tell you: if you don’t look after your towels, they will eventually stop working.

Over time, cloths become clogged with wax, polish, and road dirt. If you wash them the wrong way, they lose their absorbency and can even become abrasive, leading to unwanted scratches on your clear coat. Follow this guide to keep your detailing gear in showroom condition.

The Golden Rules of Microfibre Care

To extend the life of your towels and cloths, you need to be strategic about laundry day.

1. Separate by Usage

Never mix your towels.

• Keep them separate: Always wash your “wheels and engine” cloths separately from your “paint and interior” towels. You don’t want brake dust or heavy grease particles trapped in a towel that you then use on your bonnet.

2. The Right Wash Cycle

• Temperature: Wash at a maximum of 40°C. High heat can melt the tiny microfibres, effectively “cooking” the fabric and making it hard and scratchy.

• Detergent: Use a dedicated microfibre wash or a gentle, non-biological liquid detergent.

• The Big “No-No”: NEVER use fabric softener. Fabric softener coats the fibres in chemicals that block their ability to absorb water. It effectively turns a highly absorbent drying towel into a water-repellent sheet!

3. Drying Your Towels

• Air Dry: The best way to dry your towels is to hang them up in a clean, dust-free environment.

• Tumble Dry (Caution): If you must use a tumble dryer, use a low-heat or cool setting only. High heat will fuse the microfibres together, destroying the “fluffiness” required to safely buff your paintwork.

How to Deep Clean “Clogged” Towels

If your drying towel isn’t soaking up water like it used to, it’s likely clogged with old wax or sealant residue.

• The Vinegar Trick: Adding a small cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle can help break down mineral deposits and stubborn wax residue. This natural solution is fantastic for leaving your microfibre towels feeling soft and fluffy again.

A well-maintained drying towel should last for hundreds of washes. By taking these simple steps, you ensure that every time you touch your car, you are using a tool that is soft, absorbent, and—most importantly—completely safe for your paint.

Pro Tip: If a towel has been dropped on the floor, retire it immediately from paintwork duty. It’s not worth the risk of picking up a stray stone or grit that could ruin your finish. Use those “dropped” towels for dirty jobs like door shuts or under the bonnet instead!
